Laurie Kirkner, Director and Senior Learning Designer
Laurie Kirkner serves as director of the Office of Digital Learning (ODL) and senior learning designer. She has worked in the digital learning space in higher ed for over twelve years with a focus on starting and overseeing online learning programs as well as digital learning design. She is an alumna of Notre Dame where she studied English. She received her MS from Indiana University in Instructional Systems Technology where she focused on process and performance development and learning design.
Before joining Notre Dame, at the largest singly-accredited community college in the country, Laurie headed up the college’s central learning design team and managed at any one time over 100 faculty online course developers and course mentors. Annually, the design team oversaw the design or redesign of 50-75 course projects a year. Joining the Office of Digital Learning in fall 2014, Laurie worked as the Senior Learning Designer to move the team through production and release of the office’s first set of MOOCs (massive, open, online courses) and the completion of several intriguing internal projects on-campus - all with the aim of enhancing the teaching and learning experience here at Notre Dame and sharing the expertise and knowledge represented by the University with the rest of the world.
Now, as director and senior learning designer in the office, Laurie works to support the success and growth of the design and production team comprised of digital learning designers, course producers, graphics artists, videographers, and editors. In partnership with the chief academic digital officer, ODL creative director, and director of academic digital media services, Laurie and the ODL team supports over a dozen course or content development projects a year.
